Community, What's On
Sinn Féin Assembly Members Mickey Brady and Megan Fearon were joined by Newry Rainbow Community’s Padraig Lynch for the official launch of Sinn Féin’s ‘Pride in Politics’ event. Megan Fearon MLA described what ‘Pride in Politics’ is all about. She stated, “Sinn Féin is for equality for everyone on the island of Ireland. Unfortunately, members of the LGBT community still face discrimination in many ways. We wanted to contribute in some way to the Pride in Newry Festival so we have arranged an event on Wednesday 26th September in Newry Arts Centre from 10am – 12pm.” “This will be an informal event where people interested in LGBT issues can drop in for a coffee and a chat with Sinn Féin representatives. People will have the opportunity to ask what Sinn Féin is doing for the LGBT community and we hope the Rainbow Community will tell us how we can help them.” Fearon’s Sinn Fein colleague Mickey Brady stated, “We are really looking forward to Pride in Newry and indeed ‘Pride in Politics’ and we see our participation in the festival as the next step in our campaign for equality for LGBT people. “Sinn Féin has been to the fore in promoting Marriage Equality and I am proud that this motion was recently introduced in Newry & Mourne District Council by my party colleagues and subsequently passed. He added, “I hope that lots of people call in with us on Wednesday 26th September, even if they only have 5 minutes to spare and I am really looking forward to the Parade on 29th which will showcase Newry as a vibrant and progressive city.”
