Warrenpoint to host ‘Bandstand Marathon’

Warrenpoint Municipal Park bandstand is set to host the Northern Ireland flagship event of the nationwide Bandstand Marathon on Sunday 9th September, the final day of the Paralympic Games.

The official closing event of the London 2012 Festival, Bandstand Marathon will see hundreds of outdoor community concerts take place throughout the UK in a national musical celebration of the London 2012 Games and a fantastic summer of sport and culture.

From 1pm until 5pm the bandstand will be alive with music from local favourites The Warrenpoint Silver Band, which has recently celebrated it’s 60th Anniversary, The St Peter’s Silver Band, and St. Catherine’s Concert Band Newry, whose members are aged 13 to 78 and wow crowds with everything from pop classics, to hits from stage and screen, as well as more traditional marches, military music and Irish songs.

Warrenpoint Municipal Park will also join in a collective moment across Bandstand Marathon events nationwide whereby musicians at each location will perform their own unique rendition of Coldplay’s anthemic hit Viva La Vida.

This will take place simultaneously at 2pm in bandstands across the UK, including the Bandstand on the Olympic Park, ahead of Coldplay’s headline performance at the Paralympic Games Closing Ceremony later that evening.

Newry Mayor John McArdle said he was delighted to attend the final event in relation to the Olympic/Paralympic Games of London 2012.

The Mayor said, “The whole Olympic Theme in relation to Newry and Mourne was a huge success and I was delighted to be present to watch local swimmer Laurence McGivern participating in the Paralympic Games in London at the weekend.”

The Mayor added, “It was also a fitting tribute that the forthcoming event in Warrenpoint Park was chosen as the flagship event in Northern Ireland to celebrate the closing of the Olympics/Paralympics with the Bandstand Marathon.”
