European Heritage Open Days

Newry and Mourne District council has announced that the Ross Monument in Rostrevor will be open between 9am and 5pm on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th of September.

Eminent  military historian and local author, Dr. John McCavitt, will be conducting tours of this Egyptian obelisk on both days which is part of the celebrations of European Heritage Open Days in 2012 .

Ross Monument, which dates to 1826, is an important heritage site in the district which was restored a number of years ago and since then had attracted an increasing number of visitors. Interest in the career of General Ross continues to grow.

Dr McCavitt’s talk will set Ross’ career against the background of the Napoleonic Wars as well as the 1798 rebellion in Ireland and then focus on his role in the War of 1812 when the army he led captured Washington and burnt the White House.

The talk will conclude with details of exiled United Irishmen who fought against him.  Councillor Charlie Casey speaking about the event said, “European Heritage Weekend provides a great opportunity to showcase important heritage sites such as Ross Monument”

Places on the tours can be booked in advance through Newry Tourist Information Centre.
