After 1250 years Vikings return to Slieve Gullion
This Saturday will see the return of Vikings to Slieve Gullion Courtyard, but it’s not an invasion, it’s a family fun day organised by the Ring of Gullion AONB and Enspire.
“It’s been a while” said Enspire’s Viking leader Thomas Whitebeard, “We thought we’d come back and see how the place is getting on… My Ancestor, Haarl Bluetoes, named Carlingfjord, you know…”
The Vikings are remembered at places like Killeavy, where they attacked the original church of Saint Monina and down the coast at Annagasson, where they used to spend the winter.
“If you ever get the chance to see the Viking longboats at the Viking Museum in Norway, you’ll know how brave the Vikings were – they’re really quite small and let in lots of water” said Mr Whitebeard, “… But it’s a shame everyone remembers my ancestors as vicious warriors… I mean, they were, but that’s not all they were…”
Sixty families have already booked to attend and learn about our Viking visitors, take part in fun activities and games.
Vicious Vikings is run on behalf of the Ring of Gullion AONB by Enspire. The Enspire website is www.enspirelearn.com and will have details of upcoming events.
