Mayor presents certificates for ‘Ourselves, Our Heritage’ programme
Councillor John McArdle, Mayor of Newry and Mourne District Council has presented the certificates of completion to the participants of ‘Ourselves, Our Heritage’ programme at Newry and Mourne Museum.
The six week course ‘Ourselves, Our Heritage’ was devised to help participants learn about the area in which they live. This involved handling artifacts from the Museum’s collection and going on guided tours of Newry City.
Many of the artifacts were donated by local people that reflect their own experiences, interests and hobbies. When put together they build up a picture of how Newry and Mourne developed over hundreds of years.
By visiting historic sites like the Town Hall, St Patrick’s graveyard and Bagenal’s Castle the group were able to see how Newry has developed and learn more about its historic citizens.
A large part of the course was the emphasis on developing artistic skills and at the presentations, the art work which was inspired by what the group had learned over the six weeks was on display.
Speaking at the event, Mayor McArdle said congratulated the ARC group and stated, “Hopefully you have learned more about the history of Newry and Mourne and the work that the Museum does and I am sure we will see you back again at the Museum, congratulations.”
