Silverbridge company awarded grant aid

Southern Organisation for Action in Rural Areas (SOAR) is delighted to award financial assistance of £50,000 to James and Nell McAvoy to develop, refurbish and enhance their rented premises into more efficient work space suitable to their tenant, located in Silverbridge.

The newly refurbished premises in Silverbridge are today looking vibrant, functional and modern in the heart of South Armagh, following an upgrade and facelift part funded by SOAR.

After a successful assessment process, Mr and Mrs McAvoy were awarded grant aid to undertake an upgrade of the current facility which would involve the demolition of the current farm buildings, and erection of new workspace units.

Mr and Mrs McAvoy identified a need to develop, refurbish and enhance their rented premises into more efficient work space suitable to their tenant, in order to ensure that Polar International continued to trade from this location. Mr and Mrs McAvoy proved that unless they undertook such refurbishment works to bring their rented building up to standard for leasing, they would be unable to secure the continued occupancy of the current tenant over the long term.

Applications for grant aid are due to open later in 2012.  This grant aid will allow people living in these rural areas to invest in a new farm diversification project or rural business or to expand existing projects and businesses.

Miceal McCoy Chairperson of SOAR’s Local Action Group stated “I would like to congratulate Mr and Mrs McAvoy on the redevelopment of this premises which will ensure a long term lease to be upheld. This is an excellent example of a farming family gaining the necessary financial assistance from SOAR. As Chair of the Local Action Group I wish Mr and Mrs McAvoy the very best in their future development of the business.”

Grants of up to £50,000 for Businesses are available for equipment, renovation of underused buildings or capital construction of new buildings to house new businesses.  £5,000 is also available for marketing activities such as the development of websites, new brochures to promote a business and their services and products, as well as new signage.
