South Down MLA speaks at Belfast Pride Festival

Sinn Féin MLA Caitriona Ruane has welcomed the opportunity to speak at the Belfast Pride Festival at an event this week.

Speaking to Newry Times, Ruane said,

“I was delighted to have been invited to take part in a debate ‘Hymn or Us’ chaired by William Crawley as part of the Belfast Pride Festival. The Gay, Lesbian Bisexual and Transgender community have a role to play in everyday life so it is important that greater society debate the issues that have an impact on the LGBT community.”

“Equality will only be implemented if we acknowledge and understand the problems and take actions on the issues that effect the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. Sinn Féin has been at the forefront of pushing forward the equality agenda and the event was also an opportunity to explain what the party has been doing in terms of bringing equality to the GLBT community in all aspects of civic life including supporting the campaign of allowing gay people to be married.”

“Sinn Féin have already brought forward motions passed in Belfast, Cork and Omagh councils on this issue and intend to take it to other councils in the weeks and months ahead,” she added.
