McGinn fears ‘traveller feud’ after violent Bessbrook incidents
Councillor Pat McGinn has expressed community fears that a feud between traveller families may erupt after what he described as a series of serious violent incidents recently in the Bessbrook area.
Speaking to Newry Times, McGinn said, “The latest incidents have sparked fears in the district of a feud between members of the travelling community, and I would call for an end to this immediately.”
“I understand that the PSNI are now investigating the incidents and have made a number of searches in homes in the area. What happened has caused serious anxiety amongst the entire community”.
He continued, “There is a huge risk of people being caught up in this violence, especially young people. Cool heads must prevail or else there is a danger that someone will be seriously injured or worse.”
“I expect the PSNI to ensure as practically as possible the safety and well being of all, and I will urgently request the Newry and Mourne Travellers Forum to meet to investigate avenues to encourage mediation between those caught up in this current situation.”
