Warrenpoint man set to scale new heights for charity

Warrenpoint man John Corrigan will be scaling new heights and taking on the ultimate endurance challenge this month as he gets set to complete the ‘10 County Peaks Challenge’ in aid of Concern Worldwide (Concern).

Warrenpoint man John Corrigan is hoping to raise £10,000 in memory of his granddaughter Chloe

John has set himself the personal challenge of climbing to the top of the 9 counties of Ulster plus Co. Louth in only 100 hours (four days) to mark the 10th anniversary of his granddaughter’s tragic death and to raise £10,000 for the memorial fund set up in her memory.

The Warrenpoint man will be setting off on his grueling challenge from Warrenpoint Town Square at 8:00 am on July 27th and from there he will spend four days travelling across all ten counties and to the peaks of Slieve Donard in Co Down (850m),  Slieve Gullion in Co Armagh (573m), Cuilcagh Co Fermanagh and Cavan(666m), Trostan Co Antrim (550m), Sawel Co Derry and Tyrone(678m), Errigal, Co. Donegal (751m), Slieve Beagh, Co. Monaghan (373m) and Slieve Foye Co.Louth (589m).

Since 2002, the Corrigan family have raised £20,000 for Concern which has helped build a new school in Kenya and has supported education projects both in Kenya and Haiti. Through this donation, the international humanitarian aid charity, has enabled thousands of children, particularly girls and those from marginalised groups to gain access to education. This year, John is hoping to raise £10,000 which is £1,000 for every year without their beloved Chloe. The money from this year’s ‘10 County  Peaks Challenge’ will again go towards education projects in Haiti.

Speaking to Newry Times, John Corrigan said, “I lost my granddaughter Chloe in a car accident in November 2002. During what was a very emotional time the whole family wanted to do something to keep her memory and spirit alive and through this we set up the Chloe Corrigan Memorial Fund through Concern.

“Chloe loved school and by supporting education projects in some of the world’s poorest countries where millions of children struggle to access schooling, we knew it would be a fitting tribute to our lovely girl. Ten years later I want to continue to celebrate her young life by completing this challenge and raising £10,000. To reach this milestone would mean the world to me and my family.”

Speaking about John’s challenge, Claire Fitzsimons, Community Fundraiser from Concern Worldwide said, “As challenges go they don’t get much bigger than this. Once again John will be pulling out all the stops in their bid to raise money for Concern and I would ask everyone to support him as he prepares for his biggest challenge yet.”

Donations can be made through the family’s Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/chloecorrigan or text donate by texting the word  TOPS99 then £2, £3 or £5 and send to 70070.
