The Barry McGivern Band coming to town

“Simply, absolutely brilliant”, says Rory’s brother, Donal Gallagher, about the Barry McGivern Band.

Barry is a self taught musician who plays by ear, he first saw Rory on TV performing in the Taste Band in 1969 and since then has had an enduring relationship with Rory’s music, having seen Rory perform over 30 times at various gigs throughout Ireland and the UK.

The Barry McGivern Band has been playing Rory’s music the length and breadth of Ireland, featuring at the Rory Gallagher Festival in Ballyshannon and at the Belfast City Blues Festival.

The Band plays an average of 30 Rory Tribute gigs a year and with 10 years on the road the Band delivers an authentic Rory Gallagher performance that belies their hero Rory’s passion, energy, guitar technique and “pedal to the metal” performances.

Featuring songs from the Taste era right through to Rory’s final line up, the Band covers the full spectrum of Rory’s music. The Band consists of long-serving bass player Rodney Hunter who is not only a great bassist but is also a mean guitar player in his own right.

New boy on drums is Dan McQuillan whose style is a cross over of John Wilson’s jazzy style blended with Ted McKenna’s power hitting.

The rhythm section takes the Band from euphoric highs to “hear a pin drop” depths. Not many guitar players get this close to what Rory was doing but Barry McGivern delivers the goods every time.

Rory Gallagher Tribute – The Barry McGivern Band – gig will be held in The Amplfied Bar, Newry on Saturday 25th July.
