Official opening of Tone Zone at Kilbroney Park

The Tone Zone Project Area in Kilbroney Park was officially opened by Newry Mayor Cllr John McArdle this week.

The Mayor was joined by former president of Ireland, Mary McAleese and partners in the scheme, Newry and Mourne Senior Citizens Consortium and Rostrevor luncheon club. Mrs McAleese was instrumental in bringing the concept of Tone Zone Areas to Ireland whilst she was President of Ireland.

Mayor McArdle stated, “The Tone Zone project is aimed at providing opportunities for citizens of all ages to exercise and improve their overall fitness. Robust and attractive exercise machines have been provided so that people passing by can spend a few minutes limbering up before going about their daily business. More organised groups including older people’s groups can use the exercise equipment to carry out more intensive programmes.”

He added, “I would like to thank in particular our partners in the scheme, Newry and Mourne Senior Citizens Consortium and Kilbroney Luncheon Club for their foresight in developing this project and I would like to thank SOAR, under the Rural Development Fund, and Newry and Mourne Council for funding this scheme.”
