SDLP South Down MLA Karen McKevitt has condemned those responsible for an armed robbery at the Castlewellan branch of Ulster Bank. Speaking to Newry Times, she said: “This was a deeply traumatic experience for both customers and bank staff. I am glad that the robbers had to abandon a cash cassette when they triggered its internal alarm. But we can only assume that they thought the difficulties facing the bank right now provided them with opportunities and that there might be extra cash in the branch with computer systems not functioning.” McKevitt added, “Ordinary bank customers and local businesses are facing enough problems as it is without these parasites trying to exploit the situation. The situation at Ulster Bank has gone on far too long and I strongly support the calls of our MPs for high-level intervention.”
