McKevitt welcomes removal of Irish language funding threat

SDLP culture spokesperson Karen McKevitt MLA has welcomed reports that Foras na Gaeilge will retain its system of core funding for Irish language groups rather than go ahead with a proposal for competitive tendering.

Speaking to Newry Times she said: “We have vigorously supported the campaign of Irish language groups against the tendering proposals. As our Irish language spokesperson Dominic Bradley has pointed out, it would have damaged a large part of the Irish language voluntary sector and would have hit Irish language organisations in the north particularly hard.”

McKevitt added, “We put forward an Assembly motion opposing the proposals which won cross-party support. Any funding reforms that are needed must be  brought forward on the basis of proper consultation which can win support across the language sector.”
