Police investigate reports of sexual assault

Police in Newry are investigating a report of a sexual assault in the Monaghan Street area of Newry in the early hours of Sunday 1st July.

Police say the alleged assault took place in the Monaghan Street area of the city

There was widespread speculation from the local media in Newry that a body had been recovered after members of the public witnessed forensic detectives in the area.

These claims however, were unfounded and a PSNI spokesman spoke to Newry Times and confirmed that they are investigating reports of a sexual assault in the area.

The PSNI Newry spokesman also confirmed that a 22 year old man was arrested in connection with the incident has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
