Dog litter bins requested for Meigh

Sinn Féin councillor Packie McDonald has requested that council supply the Meigh area with dog litter bins following complaints by a number of local residents.

“Dog fouling has been an issue” the Slieve Gullion councillor said, “for many walkers who use the footpath to the local school. There is simply nowhere for responsible dog owners to dispose of dog waste and as a consequence school children are walking this mess into the school and their homes.

“People have mentioned the health and safety aspect of this situation to me as well as how bad this mess can be to look at and for this reason I have contacted the dog warden regarding the urgent erection of signage and bins.”

He added, “I am hopeful that Newry & Mourne District Council will agree to my request and the bins should be in place over the coming weeks. I hope that the availability of bins will encourage responsible dog ownership- remember, bag it – bin it.”
