Sinn Féin MLA Caitriona Ruane has welcomed the decision by Education Minister John O’Dowd to award Gaelscoil na mBeann in Kilkeel grant aided status. Speaking to Newry Times, Ms Ruane said, “Recently I accompanied a delegation from Gaelscoil na mBeann to meet with Education Minister at Stormont to lobby for grant aided status for the school. I am delighted that the Minister has today responded positively to their request and granted them that status. “There is a growing number of parents who wish to have their children educated through the medium of Irish in the South Down area and Gaelscoil na mBeann has proven its ability to deliver a first class education through Irish. Gaelscoil na mBeann has shown it is sustainable by the number of pupils enrolled and underlines the need for further investment in the Irish language sector right across the North.” Ruane added, “Not only does Irish school provide children with an education through the medium of Irish but results also show they deliver academic excellence second to none.”
