Craobh Rua Camlocha Hurling Club Notes

Under 16 League: Craobh Rua 1-10 Cuchulainns 2-5

Craobh Rua Under 16 team claimed a narrow victory over Cúchulainns in their latest league match. The game, played in a sporting manner, was a terrific advertisement for hurling, as both teams displayed great skills and passion. Points from play by Kyle Kane, Barra McAteer and Joe O’Connor gave Craobh Rua the start they wanted, but Cúchulainns refused to lie down. Craobh Rua conceded a soft goal to let Cúchulainns back into it, and trailed by a point at half time.

Brendan Malone was forced from the field due to injury after a great first half display. The second half performance by Craobh Rua was a pleasure to experience and led by Captain Kyle Kane they showed their class. After a pointed free by Joe O’Connor, Kyle soloed 50 yards and finished to the top corner. The defence worked tirelessly with Fergus Quinn dominating the square, goalkeeper Caolin Rowntree did well when called upon and Conor McIntyre shadowed his man to great effect all evening.

A fine long range point from Barra McAteer was one of the scores of the day and Joe O’Connor continued to impress with his free taking. Brendan Nutley and Ryan Diamond showed fine composure when under pressure with their hard work and accurate distribution into the forward line. A late Cúchulianns goal wasn’t enough to get the visitors back in contention and Craobh Rua won with two points to spare.

This was an uplifting and committed performance by all players involved. Our Under 16 team are fully aware of what they are up against come championship time as they face the same opponents in the first round. A lot of hard work on the training field will be needed before then, so a big turnout at training is expected each Wednesday and Sunday evening. The Club wish Brendan Malone a speedy recovery from his injury and would also like to congratulate Barra McAteer and Joe O Connor on their Ulster team selection.

Underage: The sponsored walk has been put back a few weeks due to the various workloads and demands that have been within the Club these past few weeks. Craobh Rua would encourage all underage players and their parents/guardians to get a sponsor card and become involved. Sponsor Cards continue to be given out each Monday night and any player who has their £20 sponsorship collected can hand their money in on that night also. Training this week is from 6.30am to 7.30am as our Under 14 team has a home match. Our Under 12 and Under 14 teams continue their training and coaching at the usual times.

Senior/Minors: Congratulations to Ryan Lundy and Sean Casey, our Minor team members who were members of the County team in the Ulster Minor Hurling Championship. It was also great to see Fiachra Bradley, Michael Garvey and Ryan Lewis involved with our senior County Team. Craobh Rua Camlocha is very proud of these young hurlers achievements.

Our Minors have a game next Sunday against Killeavy and there will be a meeting with the squad. Ryan Lewis and Michael Garvey who have committed time to coaching and training within the Club structures will be in touch with players to inform them of details. Meanwhile senior training continues on Tuesday nights, if there is no match and on Thursday nights. All Senior and Minor hurlers are encouraged to attend.

Thurles Fund Raising Cycle: Arrangements for our fundraising Cycle to Thurles on the weekend of the Munster Hurling Championship Final are progressing well. Many players and Club supporters have expressed an interest in the Cycle which leaves Camloch on the 14th of July arriving on the 15th of July. Miceal Bradley is the coordinator of this event and all enquiries should be directed to him. The first £100 is now required Ar do Rua …. Thar (On your Bike for Craobh Rua).
