Newry and Mourne Olympic Torch visit

The Olympic Torch will visit Newry City Tuesday 5th and again on Wednesday 6th June 2012. The Olympic Torch Visit to Newry and Mourne District will include an Evening Celebration and Civic Event.

The Evening Celebration will take place on Tuesday 5th June at Páirc Esler 4:00 – 8:00 pm followed by a Civic Event on Wednesday 6th June at Newry Town Hall 1:00 – 2:00 pm.

Council Officials have been liaising with all the Schools, Community Groups, Sporting Groups and the local Business Community within the District, seeking their participation by turning out to welcome the Torch for both events.

Entry to Páirc Esler Stadium on Tuesday 5th June will be by ticket only from 4:00pm. Tickets for the event – which are free – are available through four outlets in Newry and Mourne including Newry Arts Centre, Warrenpoint Town Hall, Crossmaglen Community Centre, and Kilkeel Leisure Centre.

Traffic Management arrangements have been put in place with diversions and parking restrictions being implemented by PSNI along the route at required locations.  In particular there will be parking restrictions along Windsor Avenue, New Road and Abbey Way through to William Street Junction and at the approach to Páirc Esler.

Car parking arrangements have been put in place with free parking at Buttercrane car park all day and at the Quays car park from 4:00 pm. Other City Centre car parks will be operating as normal.

The main entertainment at Páirc Esler will be General Fiasco with supporting two 10 minute local content slots from Bernagh and Morgan School of Dance. Doors open at 4:00 pm with the entertainment beginning at 5:30 pm. The torch arrival will be at 6:50 pm.

Beat on the Street will be provided by Q Radio from 3:00 – 6:00 pm at Newry Town Hall with Coca Cola sample handouts being distributed at three locations along the Olympic torch route.
