Details announced for Olympic Torch visit

This week the Chief Executive of Newry and Mourne District Council, Mr. Thomas McCall presented Mayor Charlie Casey with a copy of the Brochure giving details of the celebrations surrounding the arrival of the Olympic Torch in Newry on Tuesday 5th June. Copies of this brochure which will be delivered to all households in the Newry and Mourne District Council area this week.

The series of Olympic Torch Relay Associated Events kicks off with the Mayor’s Charity 5K-10K Run on Thursday 17th May, and culminates on Sunday 9th September with the 2012 Bandstand Marathon in Warrenpoint Park.

The Olympic Torch will be welcomed in Pairc Esler on Tuesday evening 5th June where the official Olympic sponsors, Coca Cola and Samsung have organized a fun filled two hour concert, featuring Northern Ireland’s own General Fiasco. Tickets for the free concert will be available on Saturday 19th May at 10:00am – 12:00 noon at Sean Hollywood Arts Centre, Warrenpoint Town Hall, Kilkeel Leisure Centre and Crossmaglen CommunityCentre.

Mayor Charlie Casey has also presented Ryan Cinnamond, who is one of the torch bearers, with tickets for the concert. On Wednesday 6th June, there will also be a Concert for school children in Newry Town Hall, featuring Traditional Irish/Ulster Scots Group Bernagh.

The Olympic Torch will leave Newry City at approximately 2:00 p.m. There will be special traffic arrangements put in place on Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th June, details of which will be announced nearer the date.

Speaking about the events, Mayor Charlie Casey said: “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the people of Newry and Mourne to come together to celebrate this unique occasion. I want to extend an open invitation to everyone to come along and enjoy this fantastic spectacle.”
