Passion Disco on the move
Newry Rainbow Community’s monthly Passion disco for the local gay community and friends has moved across town to Bellinis on Merchants Quay and from next Saturday the 12th of May it will be in the Bellagio Suite on the first floor of Bellinis.
A spokesman for the event spoke to Newry Times and said, “The NRC Committee are really looking forward to taking Passion onwards and upwards. In a way, the disco is returning to the area it started in as the first ever night organised for Newry’s LGBT population, a club called Lushious was held in the Sugar Rooms in the Exchange Bar way back in the winter of 2003 – the present location of Bellinis of course. Since the Exchange it had a short stay at Deans Bar, above where the Phoenix is now, before moving to the Brass Monkey, where it stayed for 5 Years before coming to its new home in Bellinis.”
He continued, “Newry’s gay population and the general population’s attitude to our community has matured substantially in those 9 years and indeed the arrival of a dedicated drop-in centre at 82a Hill Street – which opens Monday to Friday from 7pm to 10pm and Saturday 2pm to 6pm – has contributed to this.”
As well as the regular monthly disco the NRC organize other social events including an upcoming ‘Sing out against Homophobia’ night of music in Grounded on Thursday the 17th May as part of International Day against Homophobia and Northern Ireland Anti-Homophobia Week. They also provide access to counseling services and information on gay related matters but most importantly, a safe location to come in for a chat and a cuppa.
