South Down Líofa Launch

Sinn Féin MLA Chris Hazzard said that the Irish Language initiative Líofa 2015 has caught the public’s imagination.

Speaking ahead of a local launch on Thursday Mr Hazzard spoke to Newry Times and said,

“Just a couple of months after the launch of Líofa by Culture Minister Carál Ní Chuilín there has already been nearly two thousand people who have signed up including myself and more are signing up daily. By reaching this target so soon after the launch shows the great interest there is throughout the community in the Irish language. It is also great to see such a wide range of people from all different backgrounds sign up to learn Irish.”

“The Minister Carál Ní Chuilín will be in The Lodge in Castlewellan at 7pm on Thursday 10th May to launch the local South Down Líofa campaign and I would urge people to come along sign up and learn the language.”

He added, “Learning the language can be fun as well as fulfilling by speaking the native language of this island. The history of the language shows its belongs to everyone, is open to all and only enriches the rich cultural history that we share in Ireland.”
