‘Be wary of phone scams’ – McGreevy

SDLP Group Leader on Newry and Mourne Council Connaire McGreevy has urged people to be aware of a rash of phone scams purporting to offer cash payouts.

Speaking to Newry Times, McGreevy said: β€œI have heard recently from constituents about calls claiming to be from reputable agencies offering cash pay-outs to the person being called in return for evidence of identity. They may say that you are due a repayment of Payment Protection Insurance or are even due a cash pay-out from the government for paying your taxes and not breaking the law – it is as disparate and as wild a set of claims as that.”

He added, β€œIt is safe to say that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is, and you should alert the authorities to it. Tell your local police or call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.”
