Spring officially arrives at Ring of Gullion

Spring is well on its way and despite the recent cold weather migrant birds have started to arrive in the Ring of Gullion and are in full song. Birds like the blue *** have nests underway and broods of blackbirds are fledgling already! So it’s important you keep those bird feeders topped up for the parents to feed their young chicks.

Mini-beasts are also active in the spring, a down to earth event took place at the weekend in the Ring of Gullion. The Newry and Mourne Biodiversity Officer and the Ring of Gullion Officer took kids and parents out around the gardens of Slieve Gullion Courtyard to find as many different creepy crawlies as they could.

Speaking to Newry Times, Darren Rice, Ring of Gullion Officer said, “The kids loved it, showing off their finds to their friends and family. And it is great to see so much life under our feet in the Ring of Gullion. We found spring-tails, weevils, and even frogs.”

Danielle Begley, the local biodiversity Officer added, “This event was a fantastic opportunity for all the family to find out about their local area and its biodiversity, in particular mini-beasts.”

The Ring of Gullion Office has organised a number of events though the year for more information on what’s on, attractions and places to eat and stay in the Ring of Gullion and South Armagh visit: www.ringofgullion.org, ‘like’ Ring of Gullion on Facebook and Twitter or visit www.visitnewryandmourne.com or www.south-armagh.com
