Clarke calls for review of Newcastle public toilets
Calls have been made for a review of public toilet opening times in Newcastle following complaints from members of the public. Alliance Party Councillor Patrick Clarke said he had been contacted by one constituent who had no other option but to bring her child into a bar on a Sunday evening before Easter because all the public toilets in Newcastle were closed from 6pm.
The Newcastle Councillor said the public toilets in Newcastle are open to 6pm from March until the end of June and only open to 10pm during the summer months of July and August.
Speaking to Newry Times, Councillor Patrick Clare stated: “Last week I received a number of complaints from constituents as to the early closing of public toilets in Newcastle, particularly the public toilets beside Newcastle Centre. Given that the longer evenings and tourists walking along Main Street and the Promenade in Newcastle I find the locking of public toilets at 6pm wholly unsatisfactory. Therefore I would like Down District Council to review opening times of all public toilets in Newcastle from 1st April to the end of the summer season.”
He added, “I have requested that this matter regarding the opening times of the public toilets in the seaside resort of Newcastle be reviewed by Council as soon as possible. I have now received assurances from the Director of Environmental Services to being the matter to the next council meeting for consideration at the end of April.”
