Newry City Wanderers 2 – 0 Limavady United Youth (U-18s)

Newry U18s kept the pressure on Ballymena for that 2nd promotion spot in Section B with a hard fought victory over Limavady on Saturday morning at the Showgrounds.

Newry showed their intention from the start with a blistering opening, with Edgar volleying wide from Dillon’s set up and when Newry forced a corner Gourley took the resulting set piece, his corner smacked of the front post and though the Limavady defenders attempted to clear the cross come shot, it fell back to Gourley where he had time to look up and pick out Cunningham, who glanced a great header into the corner.

Newry were in fine tune in the opening exchanges and Cunningham was unlucky when after a great pass by Edgar his lobbed effort hit the woodwork. D’Arcy then rattled the woodwork with a terrific free-kick and King was unlucky with a great strike from 20 yards. In between times Limavady posed a threat with a couple of quick counter attacks but the first half ended 1-0.

The 2nd half began as a carbon copy of the first with Newry on the front foot and it was Cunningham again who added to the score. Edgar again found Cunningham with a good ball. The striker had plenty of work still to do but turned his opponent superbly and struck a great shot into the bottom corner. The game became a very scrappy affair after this, though Newry kept their heads down and the brilliant Lenaghan nearly added to the score when he was played through by Gourley though his effort was saved with Cunningham unlucky with the follow up.

Newry deserved the win which moves them into Second place though with Ballymena only 2 points behind and a game in hand over Newry, the Newry boys know how hard they have to work to gain promotion. They now  take on Ballyclare Comrades Colts on Wednesday night (28th March) at Newry Showgrounds K.O 7.45 and then travel to play Tandragee Rovers Youth next Saturday (31st March) where they hope to pick up those much needed 3 points! 11.00am Kick-off!

Newry City Team: Rowney, Hastewell, Hodgett, J. Annett, D’Arcy, Dillon, Gourley, King, Edgar, Cunningham, Lenaghan. Subs: Doak, Redpath, S. Annett.

Newry Times Man Of The Match – Micheál Hastewell – excellent at right back and also midfield.
