St Peter’s GAA notes – 19th March 2012

Band Concert A Tremendous Success.

St. Peter’s GAA Band hosted their 40th Anniversary Concert in Warrenpoint Town Hall on Friday 16 March 2012. There was a large attendance at the concert including former band members and family and friends of band members. Throughout the evening the audience was enthralled with an eclectic mix of very fine music provided by St. Peter’s GAA Band, who were joined by members of Warrenpoint Silver band and conducted by musical director Philip Hughes. Guest artists included Cloughmore Male Voice Choir, Nikolay and Veselka Ivanobi and local musicians Sean Daly and Patricia McCaughey.

During the evening, tributes were paid to the band members, both former and present, for the outstanding and sterling work the band has done in the community for the last 40 years. To mark the occasion, a special painting of the Band Stand in Warrenpoint Park by artist Gerry Clarke was commissioned and prints of this painting were presented to former musical directors. Barney Carr, founder of the band, was also presented with a painting to mark his lifelong service to the band whilst Kevin Dinsmore and Michael Hourican received presentations to acknowledge their membership of the band since its inception. Chairman, Feargal McCormack, made a special presentation to Hugh Carr, Chairman of St. Peter’s GAA Band Committee in recognition of his tenacity and commitment in keeping the band going over the years.

Pointer Project St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations

On Friday 16 March, over 100 children under the age of twelve attended the Movie Evening in the Clubrooms organised by the Pointer Project Youth Group. The children enjoyed the movie “The Smurfs” and the fun continued on St. Patrick’s Day with a Green Themed Fun afternoon in the Clubrooms, Mary Street for under fourteen children to the very youngest. The large attendance of young people participated in a number of activities from FIFA 2012, art competitions, face painting, dance competitions and a St. Patrick’s Day cookie decorating competition. There was a tremendous atmosphere in the Clubrooms with many of the attendees dressed in green for the occasion. Congratulations to Ann Mc Geeney ,Katrina Kernan and all associated with The Pointer Project Youth Group for their invaluable work in empowering the youth in St. Peter’s GAA Club to develop their leadership skills.

Congratulations to referee Kieran Rice.

Congratulations to Kieran Rice who has recently completed a referee course and is now a fully qualified club hurling referee. Any young people interested in taking part in the Young Whistlers Course may contact any member of the Hurling Committee.

Easter Hurling Week

The second annual Easter Hurling Week takes place in Milltown Playing Fields from Monday 9 April to Friday 13 April 2012. Registration is 10.15am daily with activities running to 12pm. Fully qualified club coaches along with senior club and county players and a selection of guest coaches will be in attendance daily. Registration is available each day but pre-booking is advisable.Please contact Damien McConville on 07749142304 or damien_mcconville@yahoo.co.uk for more information. The cost is £10 per child (maximum of £20 per family) or £2 per day. New comers are encouraged to come and try hurling and full equipment will be made available for children, if required.

Ballykelly Group South Down U12 Go Games.

St. Peter’s GAA Club will host a Ballykelly Go Games tournament next Sunday 25 March in Paírc Liam Ui Ir, Moygannon at 10.30am. In addition to home teams Warrenpoint Gaels and Warrenpoint Ógs, Annaclone, Drumgath, Atticall and Glasdrumman will be participating in this group.

Young Whistler – Míchéal Moore

Congratulations to Míchéal Moore who has recently passed both the rules and fitness tests to become a Club Referee. One of Míchéal’s first duties as referee was to referee the Under-12 Warrenpoint Ógs challenge game against Clonduff which took place in Milltown Playing Fields on Sunday. Míchéal was joined by Clonduff young whistler referee Sarah Bloomfield who refereed the Warrenpoint Gaels game against Clonduff. Clonduff and Warrenpoint U12’s both played some great football, with Warrenpoint emerging as winners in both games.

Irish language Collection.

Sincere thanks to all who made a donation to the annual Irish language collection which took place after Masses on St. Patrick’s Day in Warrenpoint. The collection raised £1,005 and the proceeds will be shared among Comhaltas Uladh, Feis an Duin and Irish Language scholarships.

Musical Celebration in The Pastoral Centre.

Following 10.30am Mass on St. Patrick’s Day, St. Peter’s GAA Band along with Scór Na nÓg and Scór dancers and musicians provided a most enjoyable Irish culture celebration in the Pastoral Centre.

Best wishes to Eoin Mc Givern.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Eoin Mc Givern who broke his arm in the U12 football challenge game on Sunday.

Camogie Club Coffee Morning and Cake Sale
