Woodside shock local rivals Bessbrook

Due to Newry City’s participation in the Irish cup on Saturday the Carnbane League committee decided to cancel all senior league games with the exception of Bessbrook United v Woodside.  A late decision was made to allow this game go ahead due to Bessbrook’s long backlog of league fixtures.

Peter Markey was Bessbrook’s stand in goalkeeper for the day as regular shot stopper Peter Murphy was suspended following his sending off in their exit from last week’s junior cup tie. Woodside played into the strong wind in the first half but found themselves two goals behind at half time after David Edgar and new signing Gavin Foy took their chances.

Woodside came out a rejuvenated side in the second half and got back on level terms with two goals from Seamie Treanor. Woodside then completed a remarkable comeback when Dean McConnell found the back of the net direct from a corner right at the death to give them the bragging rights over their local rivals. The proverbial game of two halves saw Woodside take a further step to securing their top flight status and gave Bessbrook’s title hopes a major setback.
