Inland Waterways Association of Ireland launches new facebook page
The Newry & Portadown branch of the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland (IWAI) has launched its new Facebook page IWAI newry and portadown.
The branch holds monthly meetings for its members as well as workparties every 3 weeks and numerous other events and outings throughout the year. Many of these activities are open to Friends of the Newry canal and the public at large.
Branch chairman Peter Maxwell who is administering the page said, “While we communicate with individual members by email and SMS the branch wants to reach a wider and more varied audience to reflect the wide range of people who use the canal and its towpath for a wide variety of activities. Not everyone wants to come to a meeting or workparty but a great number of people tell me how interested they are in our work and how much they support our ambitions to have the canal restored.”
The branch already has a website within the main IWAI website http://newry.iwai.ie which has a full archive of documents and photos relating to the canal and the branch’s work on it. This new page is more casual and reflects the day to day activities of the branch.
The chairman continued, “Facebook is also an excellent way of letting people know of our public events; the next of which is a talk by the famous waterways broadcaster Dick Warner on 14th March. The RTE1 Waterways programme recently won an Irish film and television award for best documentary series and the branch is delighted to have Dick visiting Newry to reminisce about his long relationship with Ireland’s waterways and their history.”
