Finer details of Olympic Torch Visit mapped out

MLA’s today attended a briefing at Newry and Mourne District Council Offices regarding the ‘Draft Celebration Guide to the Olympic Torch Visit” due to take place on Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th June 2012. The Olympic Torch Visit to Newry and Mourne District will include an Evening Celebration and Civic Event. The Evening Celebration will take place on Tuesday 5 June at Pairc Esler followed by a Civic Event on Wednesday 6th June at Newry Town Hall and also involve Council support for the following events in the lead up to the Olympic Torch Visit:

  • Newry & Mourne Mile (proceeds to Sports Relief)
  • Crooked Lake Triathlon (Camlough Lake)
  • World Record Continuous Relay Event (St Colman’s Running Track)
  • Mourne Way Ultra Marathon (off road event)

To maximize support around the arrival of the Torch, Council Officials will be liaising with all the Schools, Community Groups, Sporting Groups and the local Business Community within the District, seeking their participation by turning out to welcome the Torch for both events. In association with the Ulster Scots Agency, Foras na Gaeilge and a local Dance Academy, on-stage entertainment at the evening celebration in the form of music, song and dance will be choreographed for the two 10 minute slots allocated by LOCOG (London Organising Committee for Olympic and Paralympic Games. It is also hoped that following the Civic Event at Newry Town Hall, the Ulster Scots Agency and Foras na Gaeilge will provide a performance for the participating schools.
