Newry City U12 v Midway U12 match report

Playing 2nd in the table Midway United, Newry depleted by illness and injury gave a very creditable display. With only eight out field players and defender James Poucher deputising in goal, Newry played some nice attacking passing movements. However when one of these attacks broke down Newry’s defending numbers were found wanting and Midway capitalised on the breakaway with the opening goal. Both teams continued to attack and defend, Newry’s centre back Jamie McManus in particular was responsible for some important tackles.

Soon after half time Midway doubled their lead with a fine header which left Poucher with little chance. Undaunted Newry continued to pile forward and a move involving Charlie Billham and Tiernan Murphy resulted in a defence splitting pass which Jay Green latched onto and rifled into the net for his first goal of the season. In search of the equaliser Newry pushed Eoin Flynn, who was having an excellent game in defence, into midfield. However Newry could not capitalise on a series of half chances and Midway’s final goal was scored on the stroke of full time, leaving the final score 3~1 in Midway’s favour.

This was a great effort from the Newry lads with Eoin Flynn and James Poucher showing up well. However Newry’s man of the match was Jamie McManus who may well have found his true position as a central defender.

Newry Team: James Poucher, Ronan Dillon, Aiden Ovesen, Jamie McManus, Eoin Flynn, Tiernan Murphy, Charlie Billham, Matthew McGinn, Jay Green.
