Killeavy GAA, club news and events – 15th January 2012
Lots to look forward to in 2012
Like every other club in the country, Killeavy starts the year full of hope and ambition. Our best chance of silverware might lie with our minor footballers who have already won Armagh championship medals at both u14 and u16 level. A lot is expected of this team but they will know that county titles do not come easily and that there will be a lot of hard work between them and the completion of a hat-trick of juvenile titles.
At senior level, the club would like to thank Tony Kearney who has stepped down after two years in charge. We have appointed Gary Thornton, a native of Cooley though with strong links to Killeavy, to guide our fortunes this year. Gary had an excellent record when looking after Cooley Kickhams, guiding them to three consecutive league titles. He will meet the players for the first time this Sunday evening where he will set out his targets for the year and there is no doubt that improving on our semi-final exit in last year’s intermediate championship will feature high on the agenda.
A well attended players’ meeting last week suggests that our Seconds team will have a new wind behind them this year as they seek to make their mark in both the 4th division and the Junior championship.
Our ladies missed out in the Intermediate final last year and will be hoping to go one better as well as maintaining their division 1 status.
2011 was a great year our hurlers with breakthrough success at u15 level. We hope to be able to build on this in 2012 and bring our first u16 hurling title to the club. Throughout the club, management teams will be working hard with their squads in the hope of success and glory. In spite of their best efforts, not all will achieve their targets but we hope that all will enjoy the friendships and camaraderie that are generated along the way. Good luck to all.
Off the field, 2012 will see work begin on the next phase of our ten year development plan. Almost all the necessary building controls and planning permissions have been approved allowing us to start work on a new changing room complex by the summer. We thank all our Club Killeavy members whose regular contributions make this development possible.
Last year was tremendously busy because of our 125th birthday celebrations. This year may be a bit lower key with no gala ball and no club photograph, etc. but there will still be a range of events from festival week to occasional fund-raisers that will enhance the social fabric of the club. We thank all our members and friends for their past support and look forward to seeing you at these events in 2012.
Killeavy Lottery Winner!!
Our weekly lotto gave one lucky person a great start to the new year when Nicola Cunningham, c/o The Corn Dolly scooped the £3,800 jackpot. Congratulations to Nicola and to promoter Donal O’Keefe who wins £100 for selling the winning entry.
