Sinn Fein condemns Derrybeg arson attack

Sinn Féin’s Brendan Curran has condemned two arson attacks on vehicles in Newry’s Derrybeg Estate over the past few days. The elected representative was speaking from the scene of the attack having spoken to the owner of one of the cars in question.

“Both this vehicle, a Vauxhall Astra, and a vehicle belonging to another member of the same family were destroyed in separate attacks one taking place at 6am on Sunday morning and the other at 2am on Tuesday morning in Derrybeg. I have spoken with the lady who owned this car and she is devastated at being targeted in this manner with no apparent motive or reason.”

“The car, as you can see, is a write off so this lady will have to go through the ordeal of completing an insurance claim and finding a new vehicle. In the meantime she is severely inconvenienced by this as is her son.”

He continued, “I would urge anybody with information about this attack to bring that either to the police or a Sinn Féin councillor. I have no doubt that people in Derrybeg do not want this sort of behaviour in their estate of which they are rightly proud. For this reason the community in Derrybeg must unite against these malicious thugs whose only aim is to intimidate and destroy.”
