Man sentenced over murder of Polish man in Newry

The man accused of murdering 40 year old Marek Muszynski, has been told he must serve at least 11 years in prison.

The accused from Lisgullion Park in Newry had admitted the murder of the Polish man. Mr Muszynski was killed in the Upper Edward Street area of Newry in July 2009.

Judge David McFarland spoke of the victim’s family struggle, “The death of their son has impacted on them in a manner that has been translated from their native Polish as ‘closing ourselves off’, a retreat from family, friends and society generally, as they struggle to cope with the enormity of their loss and the manner of their son’s death.”

The judge also said he had taken into account the accused’s guilty plea, co-operation with the police and other mitigating factors when determining the length of the sentence.
