Neglected animals lead to cannabis seizure

Police in Bessbrook recovered a number of cannabis plants from a house in the Tullyherron Road area of Mountnorris on Tuesday 13th December. Police received a report of a neglected animal in the area and attended the scene. Two horses were found along with the carcass of a third horse. The animals were examined and one had to be put down.

Further examination of the area uncovered a number of cannabis plants and drugs paraphernalia in a house close by. These have been seized and taken for further examination. A 49 year old man was arrested on suspicion of cultivation of cannabis with intent to suply and preventing a meter from registering electricity supplied. He was later released on bail pending further enquiries.

A 54 year old man was arrested on suspicion of causing unnecessary suffering to animals. He was later charged and will appear before Newry Magistrates’ Court on 6 January, 2011. As is normal procedure the charges will be reviewed by the PPS.
