Top Irish Soprano to perform in Newry Christmas Concert

Music lovers in Newry are in for a treat on Monday 19th December as Joanne and David Quigley welcome top Irish Soprano, Mairead Buicke to the city, for their annual Classical Christmas Concert. Mairead was born in Limerick and graduated with a first Class honours Performance degree from the Royal Irish Academy of Music where she studied with Dr. Veronica Dunne. She subsequently studied at the National Opera Studio in London, where she took the lead in major productions including Cosi Fan Tutte, La Traviata and La Boheme. In 2007 Mairead joined the young singers programme at English National Opera where her roles included Pamina in Mozart’s The Magic Flute and Sylviane from Lehar’s, The Merry Widow.

Mairead will be performing a beautiful selection of Opera’s most popular arias from Mozart to Puccini, along with seasonal and musical theatre favourites. Joanne and David Quigley are no strangers to the stage in Newry and beyond. 2011 has seen them perform throughout the world visiting Japan, China, South Korea, Finland and mainland Europe. In September they gave their New York debut at the Irish American Historical Society on Fifth Avenue. Joanne has just returned from the USA, where she performed in Philadelphia, North Carolina, Washington and at Carnegie Hall, New York City.

Commenting on the forthcoming concert in the Arts Centre Joanne said, “David and I are delighted to be performing on the home stage again. It is always a great occasion and we love catching up with the local audience who have supported us since we were kids at Newry Feis. We are especially delighted to welcome Mairead to Newry this year. She is truly a rising star of the Opera world, and I have no doubt that she will be a big hit with our audience.”

This annual event has become a Christmas institution in the city, with people of all musical tastes enjoying it as the highlight of the Christmas arts scene in the area. Tickets will sell out fast, so patrons are advised to book in advance.

Tickets for the concert can be reserved from www.newrychambermusic.com or by calling Newry Chamber Music Box Office at 028 30830482.
