Newry & Mourne Senior Citizens Consortium event

Newry & Mourne Senior Citizens Consortium (NMSCC) in Newry has announced that it is to host the second annual event for older people at the centre. This year’s activity entitled ‘Ageing and Engaging’ will see more than 20 groups and organisations at The Quays on Friday 16th December providing information, advice and activities for older people.

Robert Grimason, Chair of NMSCC said, “We are an ageing population so there is more need more than ever now for services and organisations targeted at older people. People have different ideas of what ‘old’ is but we at NMSCC provide services for people who are over 50 years old. We are delighted to have many of the groups that work with older people in Newry & Mourne and beyond participating. We are delighted to have the Mayor of Newry & Mourne Cllr Charlie Casey and indeed many local Councillors and MLAs coming along to the event.”

He continued, “We hope that the people who come along to the event will find it both informative and interesting. Many older people especially if living alone or feeling lonely will find lots of groups and organisations that they may like to join. Last year following the event our male choir and other groups got new members. We hope this year the event will help all of the social based groups to grow in profile and membership.”

Sherryl Murphy, The Quays Marketing and Events Manager said, “Last year’s event was a tremendous success and we look forward to an even bigger event this year. NMSSC and their member groups are a vital part of our local community. We are delighted to be once again supporting them with this event and we hope that lots of our older customers will come along to enjoy this unique event on Friday.”

Ageing and Engaging will take place on Friday 16th December from 12 noon until 3pm at The Quays Shopping Centre in Newry. Among the groups represented will be- Access to Benefits, Volunteer Now, TV Licensing, PSNI Crime Prevention and U3A. There will be activities throughout the event which shoppers can take part in including Tai Chi, armchair aerobics and curling. For further information log onto www.nmscc.org
