Man sentenced over Newry bomb getaway charge

A 51 year old man has been given an 18-month suspended prison sentence for providing the getaway car for the Newry courthouse bomb last year. Ciaran Anthony Farrell of Killeaton Park, Dunmurry, pleaded guilty to providing the car to dissident republicans. Mr Farrell, who had originally been charged with causing the explosion, is the brother of IRA woman Mairead Farrel, who was shot dead by the SAS in 1988.

The court heard that there was no evidence to prove Mr Farrell had been involved in the bombing itself, or that he had any prior knowledge of the bombing. The court also heard that Mr Farrell was approached by a dissident republican and was asked to hand over the car or there would be serious consequences for him and his family.
