Hospice to host fundraising events in Newry & Mourne

Newry based charity, the Southern Area Hospice Services, is this week holding two funding raising events, with another one taking place in Newry next week. The events are taking place in a week which is known as Hospice Week, when thoughts turn to those carrying out great work in aid of others.

The Hospice has for years offered dedicated support and care to people suffering from a range of life-limiting illnesses such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease and AIDS. The services of volunteers, specialist Hospice doctors and nurses are offered to those in need.

The Hospice’s fundraising department is each year faced with the huge task of raising two-thirds of Hospice running costs, and they view events such as the three taking place in the next fortnight as huge opportunities to raise money. According to research, one in three people in Northern Ireland will develop some form of cancer during their lives, with one in four people dying from it. These statistics means the Hospice has to raise an incredible £2.1 million for 2011.

A spokesperson for the Hospice said; “All Hospice services are free of charge and we rely heavily on voluntary donations to continue providing specialist care to those who really need it. All our services are only possible thanks to the continued support from our volunteers and residents across the Southern Health Board region.”

  • A donation of £50 could buy two hours of specialist nursing care.
  • £90 can provide a programme of complementary therapies.
  • £130 can provide a range of counseling services.

The Hospice has been holding fundraising events all year, with several more set to take place in the December. The first event takes place at Banbridge Leisure Centre on Thursday 8th December at 11am. Families can purchase a candle to commemorate those they have lost, with the proceeds going to the Hospice.

The next event takes place at Craigavon Civic Centre on December 7th, with the final event taking place on December 15th at the Southern Area Hospice headquarters at St John’s House, Newry. There are other events being held by the Hospice this month, details of which are as follows:

  • Launch of a CD entitled ‘I Believe’ on Friday 2nd December at St Bronagh’s Hall, Rostrevor.
  • Christmas Variety Concert on Friday 2nd December at the Cohannon Inn, Dungannon.
  • Hospice Lottery Christmas Draw is taking place on December 19th, with tickets costing £1 each. First prize is £1000, second prize is a £200 voucher for Jury’s Inn and the third prize is two return tickets to Dublin on the Enterprise 1st Plus service.

The Hospice also has several charity shops throughout the region, two of which are based locally in Newry. You can call in to the shop located at 1C Monaghan Street, Newry or call them on 028 3025 1194. They are open from 9:30am until 4:45pm. You can also visit the Hospice Furniture Warehouse at Unit 2, Carneyhaugh Business Park, Rathfriland Road, which has the same opening hours.
