Newry’s Lost Generation, with Connor Kielty

Connor left Newry for Belfast

Name: Connor Kielty

Age: 28

Education/Experience?

Qualified Fitness Instructor & Soccer coach, NVQ Level 2 in Leisure & Tourism & Various GCSE’s.

Where I am now?

Currently working as a supervisor in the Civil Service in Belfast and have been here for 7 or 8 years. I have also previously managed my own Xtravision store.

I’m originally from?

The Armagh Road Area, Drumgullion Avenue. I left Newry about 8 years ago to enhance my career prospects.

What I miss most about Newry?

The people, my family and friends. It’s always nice seeing familiar faces. I am enjoying life but will always be a Newry boy at heart.
When will I return?

Hopefully when there is a chance to further my career or even when I have enough money and experience to start my own business. Who knows, not in the near future though as I have recently bought a house in Belfast.

Career Ambition?

Not too sure to be honest but just make the most of whatever career path my life leads me to.

What would I say to anyone currently in Newry who can’t find work?

Don’t give up, keep motivated, look in to various courses that may enhance your prospects, Belfast is also a good place to enhance prospects and offers a lot more jobs and it is only a bus ride away for those not sure if they are ready to fly the nest. I would also like to see Newry grow in stature and enjoy future success.

My advice to any young people reading this:

As my uncle Martin said to me recently “Life’s not a rehearsal” – so make the most of it!
