“We need action to deliver real equality for women.
“In too many walks of life, women still face barriers.
“This is particularly relevant for those of us in political life, where women are significantly underrepresented.
“It is very welcome that here in Northern Ireland, our government is led by women.
“For those of us in the SDLP, Nichola Mallon MLA as our Deputy Leader is a powerful role model,” she continued.
“We must use our new Executive and Assembly to make decisions that empower women and address the generations of inequality, decisions such as investing in more free childcare and ratifying the Istanbul Convention on Domestic Violence.
“So, while we celebrate International Women’s Day and the immense contribution women across Ireland have made to society, we must be mindful that we still have much work to do to achieve meaningful equality.”
The local Councillor added, “Let’s match words with action this International Women’s Day. Let’s continue the fight for equality for women.”
