Newry business expands to 3,500 sq ft premises after £500,000 investment

The owner of a Newry day spa who started her business in a rented room just three years ago has expanded into 3,500 sq ft premises at River Street in the city, where she employs 11 staff.

Lisa McCrink, who trained in health, beauty and wellness treatments alongside a 15-year career in the corporate sector, has invested around £500,000 in her business, the award-winning Zen Day Spa.

The new 10 treatment room spa, which also houses a yoga studio, skin clinic, relaxation areas and an events suite, has been selected by leading aesthetics company, Cardiff-based Advanced Esthetics Solutions, to be the first clinic in Northern Ireland to offer its facial rejuvenation technology, Divine Pro.

The cutting-edge personalised technology, which offers a pyramid facelift among its treatments, is considered by experts as an effective alternative to injectables such as botox without the need to use invasive surgery and is used by celebrities including Denise Van Outen.

Speaking to Newry Times, Ms McCrink said, “It’s an exciting time for us at Zen Day Spa as we embark on a new era, after buying new premises adjacent to where we have operated from since 2016 and carrying out a building project which has trebled our size and dramatically increased the number of clients we can welcome.

“Health and wellness is a very fast-moving industry and we work hard to keep up with customer demand for results-driven new treatments.

“We want to be a leader in spa industry so to be chosen to be the first salon in Northern Ireland to offer the advanced new Divine Pro treatment is fantastic for us and our clients,” she added.

According to a PWC report total spending on healthcare, wellness and fitness industry is set to reach £209bn in the UK by next year, and there are plans for Zen to grow its share of that market with a target to increase revenue by 350% in the next five years.

Ms McCrink continued, “The purpose of wellbeing is at the heart of the business for both clients and employees and building a successful business in Newry is something I’m passionate about.

“We have seen huge demand from people in the local area and much further away for our treatments and services which include beauty, spa, advanced skincare, non-invasive aesthetics and wellness events.

“We have noticed that our clients are increasingly interested in taking control of their own health and wellness within their busy lives and their interest is growing as they see new technological and scientific advances continue to emerge, especially on social media.

“Interestingly, almost 25% of our client base is male and we see opportunities to grow that market as men continue to take better care of their health and appearance.”

The spa owner says that her ambitious plans for growing her business have been met with some challenges around lending but that she has been supported by the Northern Ireland Small Business Fund to bring new equipment and products into the spa.

She added, “I believe that there is a lack of financial support for start-up companies which want to grow quickly.

“There is also a bit of a stigma around the beauty industry but before we expanded we were having to tell people that we were booked up for months ahead so there was clearly the opportunity for growth.

“I’ve invested in property as an asset as well as great staff and treatments that work, within a growing industry so the focus is on continuing to give clients a first-rate service and looking to the future.”

Charlotte Lyttlejoyce, from AES Solutions, said that Zen Day Spa had met the very high standards needed to be selected as the first day spa in Northern Ireland to offer the Divine Pro treatments.

“We’re delighted to work with Zen Day Spa to bring new treatments to their customers. Advanced Esthetics Solutions is at the forefront of cutting-edge technology. We have vast experience in the cosmetic and aesthetic field and as owners of our own successful medical and aesthetic clinic, we understand the needs of other business owners in today’s competitive marketplace,” she added.

In September Zen received a Business All-Star Accreditation award from the All- Ireland Business Foundation at Croke Park.

All-Star Accredited companies are progressive indigenous Irish businesses judged to meet the highest standards of verified performance, trust and customer-centricity.

Ms McCrink is also a finalist for the Award for Best Customer Service in the Women in Business Awards which will be held next month.
