Newry, Mourne and Down Sinn Féin Councillor Liz Kimmins has said that those deliberately setting fire to ditches along Martin’s Lane were causing grave concern to many residents living in the locality.

The Councillor was commenting after she was contacted by local residents expressing their concerns.

“Apparently fires have been deliberately started in hedgerows around Martin’s Lane,” she told Newry Times.

“The Fire Service have been involved in extinguishing them.

“This not only is a desperate strain on their resources but has caused huge worry amongst residents, particularly elderly ones who fear that the fire will spread.

“Those engaged in these grave anti-social activities should realise the stress they are causing.

Councillor Kimmins added, “This is not fun, this is playing with peoples lives and property. I appeal to anyone involved in this activity to stop immediately.”
