Fearon calls for domestic violence funding

Agencies assisting victims of domestic violence here should receive funding generated through the so-called ‘tampon tax’, Sinn Féin MLA Megan Fearon has said.

Addressing the Women’s Aid Children and Domestic Violence Conference in Stranmillis College recently, the party’s Equality spokesperson also called for such organisations to receive mainstream funding.

“There is no doubt that agencies working with victims and survivors of domestic abuse remain under-resourced,” Fearon commented.

“Local agencies should have access to funding generated through the tampon tax as is the case in Britain. All impediments to local agencies accessing this vital funding stream should be immediately removed.

“This means the level of bureaucracy in accessing and using this essential money should be significantly reduced and the stipulation that applications should be for over £1million removed to allow smaller organisations to benefit.

“Ultimately agencies working with victims and survivors of domestic abuse should have access to adequate mainstream funding.

The local MLA added, “There is no doubt we need a multi-agency response to ensure that we are effectively addressing the impact of domestic violence and abuse on children and young people.”
