‘Government must answer on Sellafield safety following Panorma revelations’ – Ritchie
SDLP South Down MP Margaret Ritchie has called on the Government to address the severe nuclear safety concerns at Sellafield that have been raised by BBC’s Panorama report, to be aired 8.30pm on Monday 5th September.
Speaking to Newry Times, she said, “I am deeply concerned over the security issues at Sellafield that have reportedly been uncovered by the BBC Panorama investigation, including the sharing of confidential information as well as the loss of electronic equipment and papers.
“The Government must immediately undertake a review of all security procedures to ensure they fit to protect the public.
“The risks and failings already apparent at Sellafield show the dangers of nuclear power and the burden it puts on future generations.

“With the Government currently rethinking the future of Hinkley Point C, the Prime Minister should take the warnings coming from Sellafield very seriously and permanently move our electricity generation away from nuclear power and towards low carbon, genuinely sustainable sources, like wind and solar,” Ritchie added.
