Hearty calls for contractors to stay in south Armagh

Sinn Féin Slieve Gullion councillor Terry Hearty has welcomed improvements to the Dundalk Road but warned Transport NI against a “piecemeal approach” to the district’s roads.

“Previously I had called for a dedicated team of contractors to be brought into the area to tackle the shameful and dangerous state of our roads,” he told Newry Times.

“While the recent improvements made to the Dundalk Road are of course to be welcomed I hope that these will signal the start of a series of improvements and are not a one off gesture.

“The Dundalk Road itself still needs resurfacing and there is little point in fixing it if other roads in the area are to be left to deteriorate further.

Hearty added, “I’m calling on the Regional Development Minister and Transport NI to ensure that this team of contractors stays in the area until serious improvements are made across south Armagh. A piecemeal approach will not solve the problem.”
