Newry road safety top of the agenda for Minister McIlveen visit
SDLP MLA Karen McKevitt welcomed the Minister for Regional Development, Michelle McIlveen, to the Newry area this week.
The visit was arranged after Mrs McKevitt raised the need for traffic calming measures to be introduced on roads across the city.
Speaking to Newry Times, McKevitt said, “I have called on Transport NI to bring forward plans to make roads and junctions across the city safer for many years now but no action has been taken.
“It was time for the Minister to see first-hand the dangers presented to drivers, pedestrians, residents and cyclists who use the Old Warrenpoint Road, Crieve Road, Ballyholland Road and Temple Hill road.
“I pressed upon the Minister the importance of introducing traffic calming measures, junction improvement and footpath schemes in these areas and I have received a commitment from her office that further assessments will be carried out over the next coming weeks.
McKevitt added, “I wish to remind drivers to exercise caution along these routes and obey the speed restrictions already in place.”
