Ritchie presses Secretary of State on export for farm produce
SDLP MP for South Down and member of the Select Committee for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (EFRA), Margaret Ritchie, has urged the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills to work with the EFRA Secretary to improve access to food markets for farm produce.
Speaking to Newry Times, Ritchie said, “Accessing global food markets is key for Northern Ireland’s agri-food and farm produce industry. Any barriers to such food markets must be identified and tackled as a matter of priority.
“Farmers and the farm produce industry would benefit enormously from access to markets in North America and South-East Asia. This would help the Northern Ireland economy in very significant ways.
She added, “I was encouraged by the Secretary of State’s response in which he noted co-operation between the two departments. I will continue to pursue both the Secretary of State for BIS and for EFRA on this important matter.”
