SDLP South Down MLA Karen McKevitt has condemned those responsible for an illegal rubbish dump discovered in the Mournes over the weekend. tyresThe large number of tyres abandoned beside the Yellow Road near Hilltown was described by McKevitt as ‘an abhorrent display of selfishness’. She said, “Those responsible for this outrageous act of vandalism are beneath contempt. In an abhorrent display of selfishness, these criminals have prioritised their pockets over this area of outstanding natural beauty. “Illegal dumpers are a plague on our countryside who give little thought to the preservation of our environment or the dangers of their actions. I am currently awaiting a response from Newry, Mourne and Down Council in relation to the cost of a potential clean-up and securing the removal of the rubbish as soon as possible. McKevitt added, “I encourage anyone with any information relating to this or any other case of illegal dumping to contact the PSNI immediately by calling 101.”
