Ruane backs ‘Breastfeeding Welcome Here’ scheme
Sinn Fein MLA Catriona Ruane has backed the Public Health Agency’s ‘Breastfeeding Welcome Here’ scheme, which aims to help breastfeeding mums feel comfortable about feeding their babies in public.
Speaking to Newry Times, Ruane said, “The North of Ireland has one of the lowest breastfeeding rates in Europe so I was delighted to be at an event at Stormont earlier this week to support the ‘Breastfeeding Welcome Here’ scheme and to signify that the Assembly has signed up to the scheme.
“It’s also been joined by more than 400 businesses, council facilities and popular local attractions.
“Breastfeeding has many long term advantages for both mother and child, including reducing the risk of cancer and preventing obesity in children, and it is so important our breastfeeding mothers feel welcome in our public buildings,” she added.
