Sinn Fein Newry and Armagh MLA Cathal Boylan has welcomed a new road safety campaign urging both motorcyclists and drivers to take greater care on the roads.

Sinn Fein MLA Cathal Boylan

“Last year 13 motorcyclists were killed on the north’s roads,” he told Newry Times. “That means one in every six killed on the roads was a motorcyclist, making them the most over represented group when it comes to deaths and injuries. “It is as much the job of other drivers as it is of motorcyclists themselves to bring this number down. We all have a duty to make the roads as safe as possible. “Motorcyclists must take all necessary precautions to be as safe as possible but other drivers must also be aware that people on bikes can be less visible than other road users, particularly when turning right or emerging from minor roads. Boylan added, “I would encourage all road users to slow down, be as vigilant as you can and of course, never ever drive anything after taking drink or drugs.”
